Your dog is part of the family—so it only makes sense to include them in some of life’s biggest milestones. Whether you’re expecting a new baby, celebrating an anniversary, or updating your family portraits, your pup deserves a spot in the frame.

As a pet and lifestyle photographer based in Charlotte, NC, I’ve helped many families and couples include their dog in everything from cozy backyard sessions to golden hour maternity shoots. Here’s how to do it stress-free—and beautifully.

1. Let Your Photographer Know Early

When booking a maternity, couples, or family session, let your photographer know that your dog will be joining you. This helps us plan the flow of the session, choose a dog-friendly location, and work in plenty of breaks for pets (and people!).

Bonus: I bring treats, squeakers, and patience—but knowing your dog’s quirks or energy level helps me customize everything to fit your crew.

2. Choose a Dog-Friendly Location

From quiet parks like Frank Liske and Freedom Park in Charlotte to more rustic trails in Concord or Davidson, the right location makes all the difference.

Think about:

Your dog’s reactivity (other dogs, distractions, etc.)

Accessibility if your dog is a senior or has mobility needs

Whether you want a more natural or urban backdrop

Don’t worry—if you’re unsure, I’ll recommend the best spots based on your dog and vision.

3. Bring a “Dog Wrangler” (Trust Me)

Having a friend or family member come along to help with your dog is a game changer. It allows you to get individual shots without worrying about where your dog is, and makes transitions during the session seamless.

Once we’ve gotten the shots with your pup, they can relax (or head home with your helper) while we finish up your solo, couple, or family portraits.

4. Coordinate Outfits—but Keep It Comfortable

If you’re planning outfits for a maternity or family session, try to choose colors that complement your dog’s fur. Neutrals, soft earth tones, and textures always photograph beautifully—and keep the focus on connection.

And yes—bandanas or bow ties are totally welcome!

5. Be Ready for Candid Moments

Some of the most meaningful images happen in between the poses. A quick cuddle. A nose-to-belly moment during a maternity session. A toddler giggling as your dog licks their face. That’s the magic—and it only happens when your dog is part of the story.

I guide sessions gently, but I always leave space for those spontaneous, real moments that truly reflect your life together.

6. Don’t Worry if Your Dog Isn’t “Perfect”

No dog needs to sit still for an hour. I work with high-energy pups, shy seniors, and everything in between. We’ll let your dog be themselves—and I’ll capture the love and personality that makes them yours.
