“How do I make sure my puppy is ready?”


Here’s everything you need to know to help your pup have a successful, stress-free photo session (and to make sure you love the final gallery).


1. Schedule the Session Around Nap or Playtime

Puppies operate on their own internal clocks. To get the best energy out of your dog, schedule your session around their routine. If they’re usually calm after breakfast and a short play session, aim for that window.


Too much energy? They may struggle to focus. Too tired? You might get a sleepy pup in every shot. I recommend a light play session right before your shoot to help get the zoomies out.


2. Bring High-Value Treats and a Favorite Toy

Nothing keeps a puppy’s attention like their favorite snack or squeaky toy. I use a mix of sounds, movements, and positive reinforcement to capture expressions and curiosity—but having your voice, treats, or toys nearby is incredibly helpful.


Pro Tip: Bring small, soft, high-reward treats that are easy to chew so we don’t interrupt the flow of the session.


3. Practice Basic Commands Before the Session

You don’t need a perfectly trained dog—puppy sessions are full of movement and spontaneity—but having a few basic commands like sit, stay, and look can make the session smoother.


Even 5 minutes a day in the week leading up to your session can make a difference.


4. Choose a Location That Matches Your Puppy’s Personality

Shy or easily distracted puppies often do best in quiet parks, grassy fields, or even your own backyard. High-energy, confident puppies might love a walk through a more urban area or a wide open trail.

5. Keep Expectations Realistic—and Let the Chaos Happen

Collar or harness (neutral colors photograph best)


Short leash (no retractables)


Water bowl (especially in warmer months)


Treats + a squeaky toy or two


Waste bags (accidents happen!)
